DERRY — The West Running Brook Middle School boys soccer team defeated the top ranked Windham team in the Tri-County Class I championship game on Oct. 20, 2-1, in dramatic fashion.
Both teams failed to score in the first half, which lea to the dramatic conclusion in the second half. Windham came out strong in the second half, dominating play for the opening minutes.
Goalkeeper Tucker Robbins came up huge, making save after save to keep West Running Brook in the game. However, Windham struck first with about 15 minutes remaining in the game on a goal by one of their defensemen, who carried the ball the length of the field and struck the ball right outside the 18-yard mark and hit the back of the net.
It did not take long for West Running Brook to even the score. On a strategic move, Andrew Brochu was moved from his defensive position to a striker, giving West Running Brook an extra man on their offensive half. The strategy paid off as Brochu gained possession of the ball and got past Windham's last defender and bent a shot right around the goalie. It hit the post and went right to Mason Gibeau, who finished to tie the game at 1-1.
From there, it was back and forth for the remainder of the game, with both teams having opportunities to score. Kayke Alves netted the game-winning goal with about 10 minutes left. Alves was fed by a beautiful ball sent in from the right wing by Matt Morrison that Alves struck. The ball sailed just out of the reach of the diving goalie.
From there the West Running Brook defenders Andrew Brochu, John Durant, Davon Nordelus and Pat Linehan shut down the Windham attack. Also playing well for West Running Brook were Julian Noj and Marshall Halpin, who helped control the flow of the game from their center midfield positions.
The game was well played by both sides and could have gone either way, but the focus and determination on the side of West Running Brook proved to be too much for Windham. West Running Brook took home the Class I Boys Tri-County Championship.
