Former Astro wrestler still shines

Former Pinkerton wrestler Collin Crowell, now a sophomore at Roger Williams University, competed for a national championship at 165 pounds at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at LaCrosse, Wisc., March 9-10.

Crowell received one of two at large bids after he finished third at the New England Tournament at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

He ended the season with a 23-7 record. Even though he did not place at the Nationals, Crowell has received a number of accolades during the season.

In late January, he was named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the week and the Roger Williams University Male Athlete of the week.

By virtue of his third-place finish at the New England Tournament. He was named an All New England Wrestler. Crowell was recently named to the Pilgrim League All Star second team.

While at Pinkerton, Crowell was a tri-captain. He also was a state champion and finished second at the New England High School Tournament.

Two Wrestling Rebels win medals

DERRY — Two members of the Greater Derry Boys and Girls Club's Wrestling Rebels traveled to Nashua to compete in the Middle School New England Championships on March 11.

Dylan Barreiro brought home a silver medal. Dylan went 3-1 with one pin on the day.

Derek Wilson wrestled well in representing the Rebels.

Molly Fahey competed in the United States Girls' Wrestling Association New England Tournament, which was also held in Nashua.

Molly, a second-grader, competed in the third- and fourth-grade division and won a silver medal for her efforts.

Molly went 2-1 with a pin as she battled her way to second place.

Sign up now for summer running camp

DERRY — The Greater Derry Running Camp for boys and girls, fifth grade and older, will be held July 23-27 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Pinkerton Academy Track.

The cost is $80 per child, $95 for late sign-up after July 9.

There is a focus on cross country, but is also appropriate for anyone who wants to get in shape for a fall sport. There will be daily runs, lectures, games, relays, movies, and an end-of-the-week 2-mile and 5K race with awards.

Summer soccer, fitness camps offered

DERRY — Varsity Soccer Academy director Kerry Boles has announced summer soccer camp dates. The youth week (for ages 7 to 13) will take place during the week of July 16-20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The high school week (for grades 9-12) will take place during the week of July 23-27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Both camps will be held at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School. The camps are open to all boys and girls from Derry and the surrounding towns.

During the week of July 30-Aug. 3, Varsity Soccer Academy will offer the annual Fitness Camp from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy.

This camp is open to all athletes, regardless of sport, and will assist each athlete who will be trying out for a high school sport.
