Meet of Champions: Pinkerton’s McLaughlin earns third crown

There’s still one more meet left, but Pinkerton’s Sterling McLaughlin has already had a season to remember.

The star Astro had a superb tournament on Saturday, picking up his third Meet of Champion crown at 182 pounds by recording three first-period pins and is now 45-1 on the year. In the finals, he took down Timberlane’s Cooper Kelley. Teammates Dom Robinson (120) and Jack Mackiernan (160) also both had great tournaments, but weren’t as fortunate in the finals, however.

Robinson was pinned by Concord’s Ethan Comeau while Mackiernan lost a frustrating 3-2 overtime decision to Keene’s Austin Morris. Mackiernan had recorded a takedown with two seconds in regulation to force the overtime.

All three advanced to this weekend’s New England tournament, and their efforts helped the Astros take fifth as a team at MOC with 106 points.

Timberlane, not-so-surprisingly, won its 17th straight MOC crown with 237 points, followed distantly by Concord (203).

OAKES, DRAKE ADVANCE TO NE

Two other local wrestlers will be competing at New England’s thanks to fine performances at MOC.

Windham’s Sam Oakes took second at 113, and Londonderry’s Brandon Drake also took second at 132. The top three in each weight class advanced to New England’s, with the fourth-place finishers being the top alternate.

Windham’s Aiden Williams (106) and Payton Sills (126), and Londonderry’s Nicholas Walter (170) and Josh Bean (182) all took fourth in their respective weight classes.
