ANDOVER — The Londonderry girls basketball team had a successful showing in the 33rd annual Commonwealth Motors Girls Christmas Classic, finishing 6th out of eight teams.
Courtney Shay, Colleen Furlong, Michelle Marino, Paige Velie and Ashley Rourke all played well for the No. 7-seeded Lancers (1-5), who lost to No. 2 Central Catholic, 65-41, in their opening game.
The Lancers rebounded in their second game, downing North Andover 54-45. In their final game of the tournament, the Lancers fell to Mass. power Pentucket, 58-41.
Top-seeded Bishop Guertin won for the second straight year, beating No. 3 Andover 64-48 in the championship game.
For her efforts, Shay was named Londonderry’s Coaches Award winner.
Lancer boys finish 8th
NORTH ANDOVER — The Londonderry boys basketball team finished 8th out of eight teams at the 44th annual Commonwealth Motors Christmas Classic, losing all three games.
The Lancers (1-4) hung tough with Mass. power St. John’s Prep in their opening game, but fell 76-50. Jackson Cox finished with a team-high 10 points. In their second game the Lancers led Andover by 10 at the half, but couldn’t hold the lead in an eventual 46-41 defeat.
Londonderry finished its tournament with a 76-46 loss to Methuen. Cox once again led the way with a team-high 12 points.
Lawrence won its first Commonwealth Classic since 2006, defeating Central Catholic in the final 80-51.
