Cross Country: Londonderry boys earn surprise victory at Nashua Invite

NASHUA — Perineal cross country powerhouse Concord was the betting favorite heading into Saturday’s Nashua Invitational, but the Londonderry boys team must not have received the memo.

The Lancers, paced by a sixth (out of 97 runners) from junior Ryan Young, a seventh from junior Matthew Griffin and a ninth from junior William Heenan, earned the surprise win with 50 points. Concord, which finished second as a team, was right behind with 51 points.

The Lancers’ strong junior class led by Young (16:06.9), Griffin (16:11.3) and Heenan (16:19.4) was the story of the day.

The Pinkerton boys ran well but settled for finishing third.

The Astros, led by sophomore Luke Brennan and junior Stephen Connelly in fourth and fifth respectively, finished with 60 points.

Brennan was the top sophomore in the race and was clocked in 15:59.6 for 5K with Connelly at 16:02.2. Senior Zach Plaza was 12th for the Astros.

Lancer girls take 4th

In the Nashua Invitational girls race, Londonderry came in fourth in the 10-team field with 109 points.

Concord won comfortably with 60 points, 25 ahead of second-place Bedford.

Sophomore Grace McDonough (6th, 19:32.4) and senior Caitlin Boufford (7th, 19:37.9) paced the Lancers to their solid finish.
