DERRY — The Derry Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for many upcoming summer events and programs.
Summer programs include the following:
Guard Start: This American Red Cross program is open to children between the ages of 11 and 14. It is the perfect jump start into lifeguarding, covering five critical areas: prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism. Guard Start is offered in two sessions, both held at Hood Park: Session 1 is July 5-15; Session 2, July 25-Aug. 5. It is important to note that Session 1 is a nine-day session with classes 50 minutes in length. Session 2 is a 10-day session with classes 45 minutes in length. Derry resident fee is $40. Instructional Swim Lessons: Two sessions of American Red Cross swim lessons will be offered to children at least 4 years of age. Lessons will be offered both in the morning (10 a.m. to noon) and afternoon (3:30 to 5:30 p.m.) with classes held Monday through Friday for two consecutive weeks. Derry resident registration fee is $25 per session. Nonresident registration fee is $45 per session. There is a family rate of $10 each additional family member. Session 1: July 5-15, nine-day session. Classes will last 35 minutes each day. There are no classes on Monday, July 4. Session 2: July 25-Aug. 5, 10-day session. Classes will last 30 minutes each day.
All participants must also attend a swim screening date prior to the beginning of the session in order to be properly placed in a starting level. Screening dates are: Wednesday, June 22, 1 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, June 28, 10 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday, June 29, 10 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday, July 19, 10 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday, July 20, 10 a.m. and noon and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Pollywog Swim Program: Two sessions of Pollywog Swim will be offered to children 2 and 3 years of age. Adult participation is mandatory for this program. These half-hour classes take place at Hood Park weekdays for a five-day session. Derry resident registration fee is $15 per session. Nonresident registration fee is $30. Session 1 is June 27-July 1. Session 2 is July 18-22.
Specific classes for each session: age 3, 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.; age 2, 10:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.
Gallien's Town Beach season passes: Season passes to Gallien's Beach are offered to families, individuals and senior citizens of Derry. Proof of Derry residency is required upon registration for any beach pass (day passes included). A family season pass fee is $50. An individual season pass fee is $22. Senior citizen passes are free of charge to Derry residents 50 years of age and older. (Proof of age may be required.) Two nonresident guests are allowed per family member. Guests are $4 each per day, regardless of age.
Grasshopper Baseball: Grasshopper baseball registrations are ongoing until Friday, June 24. Children ages 5 to 9 are placed in a particular division based on their age as of July 1, 2011. All games will be played on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at various fields throughout Derry. A birth certificate is required upon registering all 5-year-old participants. Children who participate in any competitive league are not eligible for this recreational program. Coed divisions are: Crickets, 5-6 years of age; Juniors, 7-9 years of age. Resident fee is $25, nonresident fee is $45. There is a family rate of $10 each additional family member.
Girls Softball Pitching Clinic: A girls softball pitching clinic will be offered, July 12-Aug. 9, at Don Ball Park on Tuesdays, 5:30 to 7 p.m. All participants must be 8 to 15 years old. Participants will learn the fundamentals of windmill pitching including developing grip, stride, wrist snap, follow-through, etc. and will work toward developing speed and location. This group is perfect for girls just learning the basics for this first time, or those that are still working on mastering the skills they have previously learned. Derry resident fee is $35, nonresident fee is $45. There is a family rate of $10 for each additional family member.
Kayak Lessons: Kayak lessons are open to participants age 9 and older. Four sessions of lessons will be offered at Gallien's Town Beach: Session I is June 21 and 22; Session II is July 12 and 13; Session III is July 26 and 27; Session IV is Aug. 9 and 10. Both 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. classes will be offered each session. Each class is 90 minutes. There is a maximum of nine participants per class so register early. Resident fee is $10, $15 for nonresidents.
Tennis Camp: Tennis camps are open to children ages 4 to 18, and will be offered during five separate sessions throughout the summer: Session 1 (June 27-30); Session 2 (July 11-14); Session 3 (July 18-21); Session 4 (July 25-28); Session 5 (Aug. 9-12). Camp times vary by age.
Classes are 60 minutes in length for participants 7 to 18, 45 minutes for 4- to 6-year-olds. Registration fees are $50 per session ($25 per additional family member) for those 7 to 18; $40 per session and $20 per additional family member for 4- to 6-year-olds.
High School Tennis Camp: The High School Tennis camp is open to students currently enrolled in or entering high school, offered Aug. 8-12. This highly instructive and informative camp will offer participants a broad range of topics and techniques involved with tennis play. Camp will meet every day for five days from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The fee is $150.
Adult Tennis Clinic: An adult tennis clinic will be offered on Mondays, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Available dates for this program include June 13, 20, 27; July 11, 18, 25; Aug. 1 and 8. The drop-in rate for each clinic date is $20 and can be paid the day of the clinic. A $15 fee option is available if paid in advance with a four-class minimum.
Adult Tennis League: An adult tennis league will be offered for beginner and intermediate players on Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alexander-Carr tennis courts. The registration fee for the season is $20 per person. League dates are June 23-Sept. 30.
Adult Yoga for All: Two sessions of this inclusive yoga program will take place during the summer months. Session 1 is June 2- 23; Session 2 is July 7-Aug. 4. This class is open to adults at least 18 years of age, as well as participants 16 and 17 years of age if registering with a parent or guardian. Each week session will consist of 75-minute classes held Thursdays, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and from 7 to 8:15 p.m. The Thursday afternoon class won't be offered during Session 2. All classes are held at Alexander-Carr Lodge. Students will be introduced to basic yoga postures, natural creative movements that promote awareness to the body, flow sequences, teamwork, breathing exercises, and relaxation. The cost is $32 for Derry residents, $48 for nonresidents, $25 for each additional family member.
Teen Yoga for All: This inclusive recreation program for youth 13 to 19 years of age will take place July 8-Aug. 4. This special four-week session will consist of one-hour classes held Thursdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Alexander-Carr Lodge. Students will be introduced to basic yoga postures, natural creative movements that promote awareness to the body, flow sequences, teamwork, breathing exercises and relaxation. It's $32 for residents, $48 for nonresidents, $25 for each additional family member.
ZUMBA Fitness with Toning: ZUMBA Fitness will be offered throughout the summer for adults to "Ditch the workout, and join the party!" ZUMBA combines Latin inspired music and easy-to-learn moves to create a fun fitness experience. Classes will be held at the Veterans Hall Gymnasium on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. Session dates are May 14-June 25 and July 9-Aug. 13. Participants can pay the six-week session price of $40 or pay a $10 drop-in fee. Open to adults 18 and over.
Hood Park: Playground hours will go into effect June 20: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. thereafter (weather permitting). Themed weeks this year include Movin' & Groovin', Party in the USA, Dino Days, Splish Splash, Goofy Games, Movie Madness, and Under the Big Top. Special events include a concert by Steve Blunt, Birthday Party for America, Wildlife Encounters Reptile Show, Mad Science Show, Trevor the Games Man Show, Harry Potter NH Audubon Owl Show, and many more. Most activities are free of charge and are appropriate for all ages. Hood Park is located at 4 Rollins St.
Summer Fun Runs: The Greater Derry Track Club along with the Parks & Recreation Department coordinate fun runs on Thursday evenings at the Pinkerton Academy track. Fun Run dates are June 23-July 28. Registration starts at 6 p.m., with races beginning at 6:30 p.m. Members of the GDTC will lead stretching exercises and offer running tips. Races for ages 2 to 92 are offered. Children will receive participation ribbons each week. Participants are asked to donate a nonperishable food item every week.
