Pinkerton shouldn't charge vets for field use

To the editor,

The Derry American Legion Post 9 sponsors a local baseball team in the American Legion baseball league.

They play against other post-sponsored teams in New Hampshire. The state champion will play other states for a national championship.

The town and state competitions are held at each other's town fields.

Derry has a private high school (Pinkerton Academy). Salem, Londonderry, Nashua and other teams have public fields.

This year, Pinkerton Academy has decided to charge $25 an hour for the use of the baseball field. I do not believe other towns have to pay a field charge to play local games.

Derry residents pay tuition to Pinkerton Academy as other towns pay taxes for their schools. The only difference is that other schools are public and Pinkerton is private.

The American Legion is a nonprofit veteran organization. The only income we receive for the league is from players' fees, donations and the American Legion post supporting the local team.

Pinkerton Academy is a very large education corporation.

I say shame on you for not supporting the town that supports you.
