Windham lights up the holidays

Windham's outdoor holiday decorating contest returns and residents are invited to show off their holiday spirit and enter.

Judging will be based on curb appeal as viewed from the street only. Only decor on the street side of the property will be judged. Participants agree to also have photos of decorated exterior posted on the town's social media sites.

There is no cost to enter contest and entry application deadline is Dec. 8. Judging takes place between 6 and 9 p.m. Dec. 13 to 17 and results and winners will be announced Dec. 20. Judging criteria includes lights, animation, themes, and placement of displays, and overall presentation. Call for information at 965-1208.

Tree lighting includes 'Polar Express' bus

The town's tree lighting has been a community effort for decades and this year the event on Saturday, Dec. 7, includes a "Polar Express" shuttle bus running from Center School to the tree lighting site at the town center. Parking will be available at the rear of Center School. No parking will be allowed on Fellows Road, North Lowell Road, or at the Presbyterian Church. All riders on the bus will be entered into free raffles for gift certificates to local eateries. Winners will be contacted Monday, Dec. 9.

This change will not effect the tree lighting at all. Santa Claus arrives at 3 p.m. for photos sessions until 5 p.m. There will be music provided, including holiday selections provided by the Windham Community Band. The N.H. Audubon Society will offer a hands-on animal exhibit and Boy Scouts will offer a bonfire. There will be free hot cocoa and cookies or, for a few dollars, check out the offerings at the Prime Time Grilled Cheese food truck.

The Windham Middle School chorus will invite all to join them in carols by the tree at 4:45 p.m. before the switch is flipped and the lights go on at 5 p.m. As a final stop before heading home, visit the free spaghetti supper, 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Windham Presbyterian Church. Bring non-perishable food items or a new unwrapped toy. In exchange for these items, you’ll receive (even more) free raffle tickets for the many baskets that are donated by local businesses/organizations.
