LONDONDERRY — Students at Londonderry Middle School spent time on Nov. 8 honoring those school staff members who served in the military.
The school hosted a veterans ceremony in front of the school building at the flagpole. Veterans attending included Steve Costa, Brandon Stumpf and Dave Spahn.
Spahn used to live in Londonderry and his children went through the Londonderry school system. He is also a Londonderry Fire Department retiree and has been a school substitute for 25 years.
Costa is currently on the middle school custodial staff and has worked in the district since 2004. Stumpf started as an art teacher in 2001.
The school's Clef Singers performed patriotic songs and a flag was raised followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Costa made some remarks including "I was that which others did not want to be. I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do. I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness… should I fail. I have seen the face of terror; felt the sting cold of fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment’s love. I have cried, pained and hoped… But most of all I have lived times others would say were best forgotten. At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was… A soldier.”
