LONDONDERRY — Police are looking for a man who is charged with sexually assaulting a young child, according to Capt. Patrick Cheetham.
The suspect, Dewey Wambsganns, 59, has roots in Tennessee and may be headed to that state or South Carolina, Cheetham said.
The alleged victim was under the age of 13, police said. The assault happened "within the last 72 hours," Cheetham said Thursday evening. On Thursday, Londonderry police issued a warrant for Wambsganns, charging him with five counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of false imprisonment. The suspect is known to the alleged victim, police said.
The day before the assault, Wambsganns advised acquaintances that he was moving back to Tennessee.
"We have reason to believe he is currently en route to the South Carolina/Tennessee area," Cheetham said. Investigators believe that Wambsganns has ties to Wilder, Tennesse and the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan area, which includes communities in South Carolina, police said.
Wambsganns is probably driving a white 2002 Nissan Xterra, bearing Tennessee registration plate CROSWND, according to police.
Wambsganns is a known firearms enthusiast, Cheetham said. It is unknown if he is currently armed, Cheetham added.
Anyone with any knowledge of the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call the Londonderry Police Department Detective Division at 603-432-1118.
