LONDONDERRY — While students may not be opening any bakeries anytime soon, they did learn bread baking basics last week.

Representatives from King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Vt., visited Matthew Thornton School and Londonderry Middle Schoo lin order to educate students about the fine art of baking and to emphasize its importance.

The Life Skills Bread Baking Program, which has been active for 20 years, was created to teach children math and science basics while also teaching them how to bake, program manager Paula Gray said.

About 550 students participated in the program last week.

Although students laughed when fourth-grader Bryan Gallien dropped some dough, he said it was his favorite part.

Sofia Cavallaro, another fourth-grader, learned how to properly cut cinnamon rolls.

“I never would have thought to use dental floss,” she said.

After the short lesson, students received two sets of bread baking ingredients to take home with them.

Students were encouraged to give back by donating one loaf of bread to a local food pantry.

“The Life Skills Program has three goals; learn, bake and share,” Gray said.
