DERRY — Police have issued summonses to five store clerks who allegedly sold beer to underage buyers during a compliance check.
Police and liquor enforcement officials checked more than a dozen drugstores, gas stations and convenience stores on April 24, that have liquor licenses allowing them to sell beer.
Derry police said the checks were done to coincide with the prom and graduation seasons.
The stores that failed the test were Metro Mart on Rockingham Road, 7-Eleven on Manchester Road, Cumberland Farms on East Broadway, Gulf on Island Pond Road, and JR's Place on Route 28.
The following people face a charge of prohibited sales, a class A misdemeanor:
Kyle Hastings, 18, of Shelly Road in Derry; Davina Oliveira, 24, of Laraway Court in Derry; Kevin McManemon, 28, of Manning Street; William Cooke, 25, of Hampshire Drive in Derry; and Dipeksha Patel, 25, of Phillip Road in Derry.
Police said eight other stores that were checked passed and turned away one of two underage buyers working with police. Authorities said they plan on doing additional compliance checks in the weeks ahead to keep alcohol out of the hands of underage people.
