DERRY — Nine-year-old Jamie Herland grabbed the wooden paddle and listened intently to her instructions before climbing into a nearby kayak.
Jamie was one of several young participants that day at Gallien's Town Beach, hoping to learn the ins and outs of handling a kayak safely.
Anyone wishing to hop in a kayak and take to the open waters can learn firsthand how to handle a boat safely this summer. Derry Parks and Recreation hosts its annual kayak lessons on Gallien's Beach for participants 9 years and older.
Only eight people can take part in the popular classes at a time and everyone must pass a swim test before climbing into the kayak.
Session 2 is underway this week, with three more sessions to follow: July 27-28, Aug. 10-11 and Aug. 24-25. All sessions offer classes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and also from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Call Derry Parks and Recreation for information at 432-6136 if interested in learning how to handle the kayak this summer.
