DERRY | Derry Parks and Recreation, along with the Derry Veterans Monument Committee, are hosting a benefit to support the new Iraq/Afghanistan monument planned for MacGregor Park.

A benefit spaghetti supper is set for Friday, July 27, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the senior cafe at Pinkerton Academy. Admission is $5 per person, and the menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, desserts, and beverages.

The dinner is one of several fund-raising events being held to support the $50,000 price tag for the new monument, the first of its kind in the nation, according to organizers. The monument will pay tribute to those serving their country before a war has ended.

The granite monument is slated to stand in the park near four others honoring veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and the conflicts in the Persian Gulf, Lebanon, Grenada, and Panama. Committee members said numerous organizations, groups, and individuals have stepped up to the plate to make the monument happen.

Other fund-raising events planned include a golf tournament on Aug. 18 at Hidden Valley Golf Course, located on Damren Road in Derry. Tournament fees are $100 per person, including 18 holes of golf, continental breakfast, and a lunch ticket. Sponsor signs are available for $20 per hole.

In addition to Friday's spaghetti supper, people are invited to enjoy a show afterward in the Stockbridge Theatre, as Pinkerton's annual summer children's theatre program presents a production of the musical "Schoolhouse Rock," at 7 p.m.
