"Last summer I was injured in a car accident, breaking my back."

The writer continued, saying times got even tougher after the accident, making it impossible to work for many weeks and having to borrow money to help pay bills and care for two children.

"There's not a lot left over for extras; any help would be greatly appreciated."

When injury or illness strikes, many families like this find themselves in dire straits and financially strapped. With no regular employment income, and young mouths to feed, it can be very difficult to survive.

For more than 20 years, the Derry News Santa Fund has heard the calls of so many people in Greater Derry and surrounding areas and has raised money to support hundreds of families and individuals during the holiday season. One hundred percent of the money raised through the Santa Fund goes directly to the Derry Community Fund, working with organizations and individuals in the area to help make the holidays bright for those who need it most this time of year.

Consider giving this year to the Derry News Santa Fund, and help make the holidays brighter for people who struggle with unemployment, illness or injury, for the elderly who are on a fixed income and can't afford to pay for warm clothing or heat, or for families who just hope for a little extra help to make sure their children have something special under the tree this year.

Contributions to the Santa Fund to date total $2,805.84 and include the following donations:

Happy Holidays from VFW senior dinner and Troop 98 | $175

In loving memory of Harvey. We love you and miss you. Love, Ma and Dad and Chloe | $100
