Local students received a big welcome back to the classroom for the new year.

Schools in Windham, Derry and Londonderry started school this week, with various levels of mask-wearing requirements or recommendations in place.

In Derry, students will wear masks, and many children entering Grinnell Elementary School on opening day Aug. 31 had masks in place and big smiles underneath.

Families stopped by a large, colorful welcome sign planted in the school's front yard for photos prior to having children enter the school.

Londonderry started its first official day, also on Aug. 31. Windham started classes Sept. 1.

Both Windham and Londonderry have mask optional plans in place for students and staff.

For high school students in Derry, school begins Sept. 7 at Pinkerton Academy.
