DERRY — The town will once again display its Giving Tree to help those in the community needing a boost this holiday season.
The tree will be displayed in the lobby of the municipal center at 14 Manning St.
Items collected under the tree will be distributed by the Derry Community Fund and Sonshine Soup Kitchen.
Donation boxes are placed to collect items to supplement the needs of those local organizations.
A big need this year is for winter coats and outerwear for all ages, undergarments for men and women, personal care items and gifts for teenagers.
In addition to town employees, all are encouraged to stop by and select a card off the Giving Tree, purchase the items listed and return them to the municipal center during regular hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Wednesday until 7 p.m.
The last day to drop off donations is Thursday, Dec. 12, for the Community Fund, and on Wednesday, Dec. 18, for Sonshine Soup Kitchen.
Tax-deductible monetary donations are also welcome and can be mailed to Sonshine at 4 Crystal Ave. or dropped off Monday through Friday, from 1 to 6 p.m.
The Sonshine Soup Kitchen serves free, hot meals five days a week to anyone in need at its location at First Baptist Church.
The Derry Community Fund accepts applications for those seeking holiday help through the town's Human Services office at the municipal center.
Human Services provides emergency assistance to Derry residents who lack financial resources to meet basic needs. Assistance includes rent, shelter, electric, oil, medication and food.
