DERRY — Private First Class Kenneth Patrick Smith II, 27, of Derry graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on March 1. Smith successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD Parris Island as one of 62 recruits in Training Platoon 1021. While in recruit training PFC Smith achieved the following: Platoon Leader, and Sharp Shooter. Following 10 days home on leave he will report to Camp Lejeune for one month at Military Combat Training then Military Occupation Specialty school.

Pinkerton students take on STEM

DERRY — Pinkerton Academy freshman girls participated in a STEM field trip at Manchester Community College on March 22. Twenty-six girls participated in the trip, highlighting education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

The girls were recommended by their science teachers based on interest, aptitude, and teacher observations related to STEM. This is the seventh year year Pinkerton Academy students have participated.

"It is important to encourage young women to explore and gain confidence in areas that have often been considered male dominated," said Pinkerton's Assistant Director of Career & Technical Education, Tracy Untiet. "By having the girls be with other girls in a setting where they can relax, have fun and learn from women who are in the fields of engineering, science, math, computers, etc. we hope to inspire them for their future."

Barka honors its students

DERRY — Ernest P. Barka Elementary School announces its Students of the week for the period ending April 5. The following students were honored: kindergarten, Chase Bury, Grace Hall, Cameron O'Reilly, Kaiden Vladyka, Ari West; grade one, Anthony Roman; grade two, Michael Costello, Faethe Cote, Bryan Desharnais, Ayva Kwasniak, Blaze Whitman; grade three, Scott Cataldi-Murphy, Michael Fitzpatrick, Jace Fleming, Elijah Szalay; grade four, Jacob Blanco, Meah Conroy, Cameron Mewa, Rhea White; grade five, Deklan Carr, Sarah Forand, Grayce McLean, Gavin Ward.

LHS names top 10

LONDONDERRY — The top 10 students in Londonderry High School's Class of 2019 were announced at a recent school board meeting. Londonderry High School Jason Parent announced the names, adding "as the proud principal of Londonderry High School, it pleases me greatly to announce the Top Ten academicians in the Class of 2019." Students making the top list earned cumulative weighted grade point averages of 4.4 or higher after seven calculated semesters of schooling, Parent said.

The top 10 students are: Valedictorian Jocelyn May; Salutatorian Urvi Chakraborty; third honors, Alyssa Jarvis; fourth honors, Jack Brown; fifth honors, Zachary Chau; sixth honors, Jackelyn Harris; seventh honors, Hailey Robbins; eighth honors, Ashley Lynch; ninth honors, Amanda Wells, and 10th honors Madison Sanborn.

Students will be honored at a Top Ten Dinner, during the annual baccalaureate awards event, and at graduation ceremonies in June.
