Robotics season begins

LONDONDERRY — The Londonderry High School Robotics team, PVC Pirates, recently kicked off its 2019 FIRST Robotics competition season. This year's challenge, presented by the Boeing company, was revealed to a worldwide audience Jan. 5.

In this challenge, two teams of three robots compete to score points by picking up, manipulating, and placing circular "hatch" panels and spherical "cargo" in specific locations on the playing field.

Following the challenge reveal, there is a six-week building season when student teams design, prototype, build and program a 120-pound robot.

The PVC Pirates will participate in several competitions in southern New Hampshire this season with the opportunity to qualify for the New England District and World championships.

The team has consistently qualified for the world championship in prior seasons and placed among the top six robots in the world in 2017.

The team is made up of more than 30 students from Londonderry and Hooksett and funded entirely through donations, allowing it to keep membership free to students. For information on the PVC Pirates, to join or to sponsor, visit
