DERRY — A popular East Derry business is celebrating a year of inviting patrons in who want to stop and enjoy a good meal.

The East Derry Tavern was honored Oct. 31 with an official ribbon-cutting event, hosted by the Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber of Commerce.

The tavern is located in the lower level of the East Derry General Store at 50 East Derry Road.

Samir Patel owns the establishment and general store.

The quaint restaurant offers a wide variety of sandwiches like a popular grilled cheese, burgers and other American and Indian specialties.

The tavern also offers a full service bar and outdoor seating during warmer weather.

For Patel, his business is growing and busy and having the added space for customers to sit and enjoy food is important.

"We are trying to do better and better," he said. "My main idea was to bring quality food and more craft beer."

Patel has operated the store for 14 years and said he has a good relationship with his customers and the town.

He also lives right in the community as a business owner and wants to be a good steward of his community.

Patel has a staff between store and tavern of about 30 employees. And the interior of the tavern shows off historical images of the store in past generations when it was a popular quick stop back then for simple groceries and even gas.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was also attended by Chamber members, town officials, and state legislators including state Sen. Regina Birdsell, presenting Patel and his tavern with a state proclamation honoring his success.
