Hood hosts family color run
Gilbert H. Hood Middle School’s PTA hosts a Family Fun Night Color Run on Friday, May 10. The night features a 1K run or walk through the school’s fields with obstacles set up along the way. Check in begins at 4:30 p.m. and the first race is at 5:30 p.m. There will be music, food and entertainment. Entry fee is $30 per person and participants receive a shirt and color dye pack. Proceeds go to support student enrichment activities at the school. The event is open to all Hood students, their families, and the community. Extra hours for tax collector
The tax collector's office will now be opening at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, open until 7 p.m. Hours on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday remain 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Household hazardous waste collection set
Derry hosts a household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. to noon at West Running Brook Middle School, Route 28/Bypass. Derry and Londonderry residents are invited to bring their materials to the collection for safe disposal. Items accepted include oil-based paints/solvents, pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners, pool chemicals, corrosives, acids, poisons. No latex paint accepted. Book sale planned
The Friends of the Derry Libraries will hold a book sale on Saturday, May 11 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Derry Public Library, 64 East Broadway. A permanent bookshop updated every month has books sorted by category and fiction sorted by author. The hardcover books are $1 and the paperbacks are 50 cents. There is a huge selection of children's books for summer reading.
Genealogy Roundtable at library
The monthly meeting of the Genealogy Roundtable is Tuesday, May 14, 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at Derry Public Library, 64 East Broadway. Meetings are informal and allow members to discuss research. All are welcome, regardless of level of experience.
Opportunity zone update planned
An Opportunity Zone update forum is planned for Wednesday, May 15, 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Tupelo Music Hall, 10A St. Presented in conjunction with Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, Derry Economic Development, and Enterprise Bank, the event will offer information on planning and development solutions, innovative investments and tax deferment information supporting communities being earmarked for this type of zone. Library honors poets
Derry Public Library hosts a reception and poetry reading celebrating the 2019 MacGregor Poetry Contest. The event is Saturday, May 18, 2 p.m. at the Coffee Factory at Hood Commons. Contest winner Matthew Forrest Esenwine and finalist Stacy Milbouer will read their poems and Derry Poet Laureate Robert Crawford will be there to present the $250 cash prize.
