DERRY — Derry police are inviting the community's neighborhoods to join together with thousands more across the nation for the 36th annual National Night Out crime and prevention event.

Sponsored by National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Derry Police Department, the Night Out involves more than 16,790 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

In Derry, police, fire, and Derry Parks and Recreation will join forces on Aug. 6 to give neighborhood crime and drugs a big going away party at MacGregor Park from 7 to 10 p.m.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships, and send messages that neighborhoods are striving to be safe and crime free.

Residents in Derry and across the country are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and local first responders.

Activities in MacGregor Park will include music by the band Groove Alliance, face painting, dancing, games, giveaways and special appearances by McGruff the Crime Dog and Sparky the firefighting dalmatian.
