The Upper Room honored its high school equivalency graduates in a ceremony June 6 at the family resource center in Derry.

DERRY — The Upper Room honored the Class of 2014 and awarded high school equivalency certificates to 26 students June 6.

Graduates gathered in the facility’s side yard to receive diplomas after completing The Upper Room program, a partnership with Pinkerton Academy.

The program, HiSet, gives students a chance to learn and excel outside a traditional classroom environment.

The seven-year partnership has moved away from the former GED program for earning a diploma. In 2014, the New Hampshire Department of Education began using the HiSet testing program.

The updated GED/HiSet Options Program is now available through Pinkerton Academy and The Upper Room. It is for students who may have dropped out, or who have had challenges with traditional school, helping them stay in school, earn their diploma, gain employment skills, and connect to further education or job training.

Upper Room officials credited families and friends for offering a strong support system to students enrolled in the program.

Upper Room program coordinator Brenda Guggisberg said students overcame many obstacles to get to graduation, and everyone should be commended for their hard work.

“This is a unique, wonderful way to get an education,” she said.

She credited the partnership with Pinkerton as one of the program’s successes. Officials said Pinkerton Academy steps out of the box and strives to make sure all students get an education, no matter what the circumstance.

Pinkerton Headmaster Mary Anderson congratulated the graduates and told them to embrace the future, the challenges ahead and to remember to laugh along the way.

“You have succeeded,” she said. “This will be your day forever, and never be afraid to learn.”

Students honored with diplomas were: Kelly Bailey, Alexis Brophy, Nick Brown, Yovannie Delcore, David Duguary, Jacob Foster, Danielle Furnari, Jacob Haroldsen, Amber Machado, Courtney Marco, Jared Meyer, Brendon Middletown, Kristen Murphy, Michael O’Keefe, Paul O’Sullivan, Brendan Parisi, Nathan Roderick, Giovanni Rossi, Dean Shean, Graeme Sutherland, Stephanie Traboulsy, Shiloh VanHyll, Vanessa Venhaus, Bllly Victoria, Jared White, and Brock Wilson.
