DERRY | More than 200 "muggles" will descend upon the Derry Public Library on Friday night to celebrate the release of the final Harry Potter book.

The library is offering a sold-out party from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., culminating in a reading of the first chapter to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling.

The library's main floor, along with lower-level meeting rooms, will be transformed into Hogwarts Academy and the "Great Hall," complete with wizard-like decor, magical moments and fun treats. In addition, a "Sorting Hat" will place aspiring wizards in their proper houses.

Children's Services director Adele Boeske said the event is an "all-library" gala where the entire staff is involved in putting on the party.

"Every nook and cranny will be filled," Boeske said of the building. "It will be all over the library."

Potter souvenir items such as magic wands, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, and chocolate frogs will be for sale. All proceeds benefit the library's programs.

All children ages 6 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket. Prizes will be awarded. There will be games, food and craft projects.

Boeske said the large turnout | 200 ticketholders | is due in part to the large number of adults who pre-purchased the book and the many children who are official ticketholders.

Anyone who pre-purchased the book should bring the receipt to the library to pick up their copy at 12:01 a.m. The first chapter will be read before the party ends at 12:30 a.m.

The library is presenting a special Harry Potter display this month. Call the library for more information at 432-6140.

Other area libraries are also planning special events to celebrate the book's release.

The Leach Library in Londonderry has a Harry Potter display and is hosting a special quiz for people to win a copy of the book.

Chester Public Library also hosts a party Friday from 10:30 p.m. to midnight. Children and their families are invited to stop by in costumes or appropriate pajamas to enjoy a movie, Harry Potter trivia contests and refreshments. The winner of the library's deluxe edition book contest will be announced.
