DERRY — Derry's cable world has a new coordinator.
Longtime Channel 17 cable staffer Chris Martin was named the town's new cable facility coordinator. He was approved by the Town Council at its meeting June 1.
Martin replaces station administrator Barbara Ellingwood, who called it quits earlier this year following a medical leave of absence.
Officials had pondered whether to hire a new cable administrator now or to wait until after budget season to see how finances would pan out.
Martin has been with Channel 17 since 1995, first as a volunteer, then as a part-time computer technical support staffer. He became a full-time production and training coordinator in 2007.
He has been filling in as cable head since Ellingwood left the job.
Right now, Derry's cable system is broken up into several channels, broadcasting community events, local programming, and government and educational meetings.
"We think it's a critical position to fill," Town Administrator Gary Stenhouse said.
With Martin's 15 years of experience with the local station, town officials thought he was perfect for the job.
Ellingwood came to the station in 1991 as a volunteer and spent the next two decades working on Derry's local cable access channels, bringing local programming and special events to the town, and taking part in community outreach, cable franchise negotiation work through the years.
