---- — GDTC announces Run for Freedom

DERRY — The Greater Derry Track Club has announced the inaugural Run for Freedom 5K/10K, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 4.

Paper and online registration are now open, with tech T-shirts available through June 25.

Race day sign-up begins at 6:30 a.m. All funds from the races will be donated to Liberty House in Manchester, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the Manchester VFW and offering transitional housing, medical care, and job assistance to homeless veterans in New Hampshire.

The 5K and 10K races will be chip-timed, with age group winners three deep in both races. All runners are eligible for raffle prizes.

The Greater Derry Track Club is a nonprofit charitable organization devoted to promoting running and related activities. GDTC is also sponsoring its first community “Get into Fitness” Couch to 5K initiative, a free eight-week program open to anyone in the community interested in training for the 5K Run for Freedom. This race is a family fun event for the Greater Derry community to honor the bravery and strength of those who have fought and died for the country.

Lady Astros set lacrosse milestones

DERRY — Pinkerton Academy girls varsity lacrosse players left their marks, not the least of which were All State Honors for 2013.

Maggie McCarthy scored her 100th career goal (done in two seasons) on June 1 in the semifinal match-up against Londonderry.

Kennedy Daziel scored her 100th career goal (done in two varsity seasons) on May 15 against Windham High School.

She broke a single season scoring record, previously held by Riann Daziel in 2012 with 73 goals. In 2013, Daziel scored 74 goals.

She also broke the single-season total points record, previously set by Megan O’Reilly in 2001 with 103 total points. In 2013, Kennedy Daziel scored 114 points.

Local boys lacrosseplayers take honors

There were lots of local athletes names on the list of New Hampshire All State Division I honors.

Topping the list was Defensive Player of the Year, Eric Coburn of Londonderry High School.

On the DI first team were: Pinkerton junior Jake Lisauskas, Astro senior Brendan Megan, Londonderry senior Rob Hart, Pinkerton senior Josh Gallant, Astro senior Dom Corsetto, Lancer junior Coburn, Pinkerton senior Sean Conroy and Pinkerton senior Ken Sturgess.

Sign up for summerfield hockey camp

DERRY — The Red and White Field Hockey Camp is set for July 15-19 and July 22-26 at Pinkerton Academy’s field hockey field.

It’s open to all players in grades 5-12, new or advanced level.

It’s a half-day camp from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost for one week is $90, $170 for both weeks.

The camp is run by Jennifer Resmini, head coach of the field hockey program at Pinkerton. Campers will be instructed in the fundamental skills and strategies of the game.

Each camp day will consist of skill stations and contests, instruction in game strategies, lectures, and small and large field team play.

Bring enough water to drink during camp, a field hockey stick, goggles, sneakers/cleats, mouthguard, and shin guards. Goalies must bring their own equipment to the camp.

Get Rock Solid at wrestling camp

DERRY — Derry’s Wrestling Rebels will host the Rock Solid Wrestling Camp at Barka Elementary School July 22-24.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and costs $165. The camp is open to grades 1 through 12.

Rock Bonomo is the former head coach at Lock Haven University, a two-time All American, and is recognized as one of the best youth clinicians in the country.
