---- — DERRY — Aug. 1 marks the end of the 2013 Greater Derry Track Club Kids Summer Fun Run.
Registration starts at 6 p.m., racing at 6:30 p.m. on the Pinkerton Academy track.
On July 25, despite the rain, children and families came out to run and to help those in need by donating food in lieu of registration fees. The wet summer evening was great for running.
An additional 50 runners signed on for the series, bringing the total participation to 493 children. The Pinkerton Academy track was filled with children running various distances for green participation ribbons supplied by the Derry Recreation Department. Watermelon, Gatorade and water were available for all the runners.
The participants bring nonperishable food items to restock local food pantries. Last week, participants contributed 214 pounds of food. The Kids Summer Fun Run series has now donated 967 pounds over four weeks.
All runners will receive a T-shirt commemorating their achievement. Also the winners in the 9-, 10-, 11-, 12- and 13-year-old categories will be announced at the beginning of the night, and the top three runners will receive a special prize.
All are welcome, and the GDTC requests only that participants bring a nonperishable food item each week. For more information and pictures, visit gdtc.org.
