In only its second summer season of competition, the Lighthouse Lacrosse Girls Summer Club teams won the championship for seventh and ninth grade divisions at the New England Youth Lacrosse All Star Tournament July 13 and 14 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
The 90-plus-degree heat and high humidity combined to make it feel like 100 degrees for most of the tournament, but the girls powered on.
The opposition consisted of several New England club teams, as well as some teams from New Jersey.
The Lighthouse fifth-grade team ended up in second place, one goal behind a strong year-round club team from New York.
Lighthouse Lacrosse teams consist of a mix of players from Southern New Hampshire, who join together for six weeks out of the summer to grow as a team and improve upon their individual skills sets.
Although the club does not practice year round as the majority of their competition does, they quickly united as team and combined their speed, sticks skills and tactical knowledge to overpower their opponents, according to Mary Squire, Lighthouse founder and director.
