DERRY — The players won big for a favorite coach.
Pinkerton Academy’s junior varsity girls took on rival Bedford last week in volleyball action.
In addition to winning the matches, the players also paid tribute to beloved coach and Pinkerton staffer Ralph Van Nostrand.
Nostrand died in January and has been remembered at the high school with memorial events and special activities, including last week’s volleyball games where players collected money to support the new Ralph Van Nostrand Scholarship Fund.
Van Nostrand was a career counselor at Pinkerton and coached many athletic teams during his 37-year career.
School officials remembered the man earlier this year for all his accomplishments, including years spent coaching volleyball, baseball, basketball and football.
He was also a true role model for all his players, showing passion for whatever sport he was involved in and also for the students he worked with on all levels.
Athletes have rallied to support Van Nostrand’s memory and support the scholarship.
A memorial tree was planted last month in Pinkerton’s garden to honor Van Nostrand. He was also inducted into Pinkerton’s Hall of Fame.
