Many of the Rockingham Area Youth Swim team members attended the Regionals club swimming competition at Lawrence Tech High School. Swimmers must qualify to swim in each event at this meet by swimming the event with a time within a specific range.
Many RAYS swimmers scored well in numerous events and several time cuts for age groups or sectionals were achieved in their races. Scoring was typically for the top 16 places in each event, but was limited by the number of swimmers in the event. Each team was also limited as to how many points they could score in a single event. Placing in the 9-14 age groups was particularly difficult, especially for the girls events in which there were often on the order of 100 competitors for an event. Local RAYS scoring in the top 16 in their events were the following swimmers by age and gender:
8 and under girls
Ella Dyjak (Londonderry) 14th in 25 backstroke
Kaitlin Witkop (Londonderry) ninth in 25 backstroke, 11th in 25 free, 15th in 100
8 and under boys
Luc Lafond (Londonderry) fifth in 25 backstroke, sixth in 50 fly, seventh in 200 IM and 25 fly
Nick Lamy (Chester) 10th in 25 fly, 13th in 200 IM, 13th in 25 breast, eighth in 50 back
Owen Nelson (Derry) 16th in 25 free
Catherine Hazard (Derry) 12th in 50 Free
Hunter Hazard (Derry) first in 100 breast, second in 100 IM, fourth in 100 free, seventh in 100 backstroke, 50 back and 50 fly
Ryan Golabiewski (Derry) 10th in 50 breast, 12th in 50 backstroke
Hannah Terry (Danville) first in 200 breast and 200 backstroke, second in 500 free
Christian Nelson (Derry) 13th in 50 fly
Sara Muller (Derry) 13th in 200 backstroke, 14th in 100 backstroke
Swimmers breaking RAYS team records at this meet included Hannah Terry (Danville), Owen Caprioglio (Litchfield) and Hunter Hazard (Derry).
Owen and Hunter both improved on records they had set earlier this season, with Owen sprinting to a time of 35.22 in the 8 and under boys 50 freestyle race and Hunter swimming a cool 1:30.49 in the 9-10 boys 100 breaststroke.
Hannah Terry pushed hard in the 200-yard breaststroke to finish the race in 2:48.00. These swims also qualified the swimmers for New England 12 and under competition.
Congratulations go out to RAYS swimmers who recently competed at the New England Age Group Championships.
