New tennis tournaments are offered this fall

The New Hampshire Tennis Hub will offer two new tennis tournaments this fall, in conjunction with Derry Parks and Recreation.

First up is the Derryfest Mixed Doubles Classic Sept. 17-19.

Find a partner and enter at the Derry Recreation Department, 432-6136. The entry fee of $40 per couple must be paid at registration.

Players must be 18 to enter. The entry deadline is Sept. 15.

Play will begin Friday night if necessary. The format is two of three sets (super-breaker in lieu of third set), single elimination.

The tournament will be held at Pinkerton Academy.

Next month, it's the Octoberfest Rockin' One on One Doubles Challenge Oct. 16 and 17.

Think serve and volley is dead? It's not, complete with rockin' music and fan support, The Hub invites players to test their individual doubles skills in this "do rush the net and play cross-court or lose" event.

Brackets include men, women, boys and girls. The entry fee is $25 and the registration deadline is Oct. 14.

The format is four 10-point service games to a match. Total points won will determines the winners. Elimination format to be determined, based on draw.

All play will be completed on one or two days, depending on the draw. The tournament will be at Pinkerton Academy.

Basketball Club hosts meeting, elections

LONDONDERRY — The Londonderry Basketball Club's general assembly meeting and elections will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. in Room 221 at Londonderry High School.

Anyone interested may attend.

Fall basketball clinic offered at SportsZone

DERRY — The SportsZone will offer fall offensive skills clinic for basketball players of boy genders, ages 8 through 17. The fun begins Thursday, Sept. 23, and runs for six weeks.

Get ready for basketball season by participating in the 11th annual clinic this fall. The clinics will run Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Soccer session starts for the very young

DERRY — The Li'l Striker soccer class open house is Thursday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the SportsZone 7 on A street Derry.

Boys and girls ages 18 months to 7 years can sign up for youth soccer classes this fall.

The 'little' brother wins bragging rights

DURHAM — Sean Ryan, a 2009 Londonderry High School graduate and red-shirt freshman at the University of New Hampshire, owns the family bragging rights this week.

The UNH Wildcats beat Central Connecticut State, 33-3, Saturday in opening day football action for both schools.

Brother Casey Ryan, a 2007 LHS graduate, is a red-shirt junior and plays for Central Connecticut's Blue Devils. He is the starting left offensive tackle.

Younger brother Sean plays offensive guard and tackle for UNH.

The Wildcats, who have won 10 straight games at home, scored on the game's opening kickoff on a 91-yard touchdown return.
