Nearly 200 join Run for Freedom

GDTC hosts first 5K/10K on Fourth of July

DERRY — The Greater Derry Track Club hosted its inaugural 5K/10K Run For Freedom July 4.

There were 110 5K runners and 58 10K runners. They set out on Bypass 28 in front of Pinkerton Academy, turned on Tsienneto Road (5K) or English Range Road (10K) to Route 102 and ran back to Pinkerton.

The 5K participants included a group of beginning runners who trained with members of the GDTC during its eight-week Couch to 5K program. Seventeen of them finished the race.

All proceeds from the races will be donated to Liberty House in Manchester, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the Manchester VFW and offering transitional housing, medical care and job assistance to homeless veterans in New Hampshire.

All participants were also asked to bring a donation of a nonperishable food item to help restock local food banks.

Runners brought more than 60 pounds of food.
