DERRY — The Kids Summer Fun Run series kicked off June 27 on the Pinkerton Academy track.
There were plenty of participants and an abundance of enthusiasm, wet weather aside. While parents huddled under umbrellas and in raincoats, the kids took to the track for the first in the six-week series.
Runners are asked to bring a nonperishable food item with them. That collection started off well, too, with 245 pounds of food collected. Last year’s series netted more than a ton — 2,291 pounds — of donations for local food pantries.
Races continue every Thursday through Aug. 1. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and runners take off at 6:30 p.m.
Members of the Greater Derry Track Club lead participants in stretching exercises first and also offer running tips.
Children receive participation ribbons every week. Runners who complete the full series receive medals and T-shirts.
Water, Gatorade and watermelon are supplied every week.
