---- — Football is a family affair
DERRY — When the Derry Demons take the field this season, it will be a family affair when it comes to jersey number 10.
Aidan and Declan Conroy both play for their individual age leagues in the local youth football league and both will wear the same number 10 on their red-and-white jersey.
That number is also worn by their older cousin, Sean Conroy, who will start this season as part of the Pinkerton Academy varsity football team.
All three will play quarterback.
Looking up to their older cousin is special, both boys said, and they want to learn as much about football as they can from someone who knows them well.
John Conroy said both his young sons idolize their cousin.
“He’s like a god to them,” Conroy said.
Aidan, 11, and Declan, 9, both started playing with the Derry Demons early, at about 7 years of age.
The football league is now underway, with approximately 150 youngsters signed up to play, in addition to the cheerleading squads, which take the sidelines to cheer on the players.
For Sean, 17, seeing his young cousins take the field means a lot. The trio practices the sport together.
“I go on Saturdays when they have their games,” he said.
Sharing the sport he loves with Aidan and Declan makes the family unit much closer, too, he said.
All the boys will be captains this year.
“It feels great,” Sean said.
