DERRY — Young athletes are learning the art of judo through the Derry Judo Club’s Lil’ Samurai Club at Veterans Memorial Hall.
Instructor Roger Lenfest, a fourth degree black belt and nationally certified coach, is assisted by club founder Chris Veziris, a sixth degree black belt and also a nationally certified coach.
The students are taught judo by first learning conditioning exercises, then how to roll and fall.
Students then learn throws and ground techniques. Older and more experienced students are taught strangles and arm bars.
All students in the Derry club also belong to the U.S. Judo Association.
A new class session started Nov. 28. A second winter session starts Jan. 9 and runs through Feb. 6. A third session runs Feb. 13 through March 13. Adults classes also are offered.
Classes are offered under the umbrella of the Derry Parks and Recreation Department, 31 West Broadway, 432-6136.
