Plan ahead before going to National Forest

Anyone planning to visit the White Mountain National Forest for a hike or a weekend camping trip. As you make your getaway plans National Forest officials remind visitors to be prepared for a variety of spring conditions.

Some areas of the high country still have snow. Spring melt-off, heavy rainfall, or slower seasonal changes can cause stream crossings to be high and footing slick. Slippery rocks, hazards below the surface, and the strength of moving water all affect safety.

Campgrounds are open for the summer. Remember, these campgrounds are in forested environments and you may experience a visit from a bear if you have unprotected food in your site. Be sure to properly store all food, including drink containers, condiments like ketchup and mustard, and empty food wrappers. Feeding bears, intentional or unintentional is prohibited and not only risks safety, but may result in a fine.

Another concern is the potential for campers to introduce invasive insects to the area by bringing firewood from home. Campers must purchase their firewood locally.
