LONDONDERRY — Birdies were flying and rackets slicing the air in the Londonderry High School gym May 6, where badminton ruled.
Teachers, students, staff members, parents and others participated in some rousing games during a special community night. Students were pitted against adults for the evening.
Londonderry High School physical education teacher Michael Bicchieri said badminton is a regular two-week unit in gym class. Freshmen and sophomores learn the basics of the skill, some of them acquiring a lifelong love of the sport.
“We practice the skills and learn the rules the first week and then have a round robin doubles tournament the following week,” he said.
There may be a new team on the horizon at LHS.
“The kids love badminton because it’s different,” Bicchieri said. “It’s not a mainstream activity like basketball or volleyball. In fact, kids usually ask if they can start a team here at LHS.”
