DERRY — The Derry Lions Club hopes to hook more local youngsters on the lifelong sport of fishing.
To that end — and as a community service — the club hosts an annual Kids Fishing Derby at Hood Pond.
They invite local children, ages 2 to 15, to cast their luck one Saturday morning every spring.
On Saturday, 87 children participated in the club’s 21st annual derby, according to Lions Club treasurer Cheryl Harvey.
The club pays to stock the pond with hundreds of fish, mostly trout, the state matches that number.
Prizes are given in all kinds of categories and age groups. Each participant receives a ribbon.
Lions Club members were on hand to weigh and measure the day’s catch.
Participants also receive a booklet on the basics and joys of fishing, part of the effort to continue their interest in the sport, Harvey said.
