DERRY — The Greater Derry Track Club was organized in 1978 to promote running related activities and support local charitable organizations.
As part of the club's ongoing commitment to supporting the local community, donations totaling $7,200 were recently distributed to four charity partners: The Sonshine Soup Kitchen, St. Thomas's Food Pantry, St Jude's Food Pantry and The Upper Room.
Every year, the members of the GDTC organize and host the annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5K road race at Beaver Lake. The 2011 edition of the race included more than 1,400 participants.
The proceeds from this race and sponsorship provided by MVP Healthcare, Northeast Delta Dental, Parkland Medical Center, Shaw's Supermarkets, Merchant's Motors, Concord Orthopaedics, People's United Bank, and Granite State Gastrointestinal combined to make these donations possible.
The next Greater Derry Track Club event is the very popular Kid's Summer Fun Run, a six-week instructional series starting in late June to teach the children in the greater Derry community about running and the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle. Event details and general club information are available at gdtc.org.
The four annual events hosted by the club are the Boston Prep 16 Mile Road Race in January, Kids Summer Fun Run Series in June and July, Mack's Apples Cross Country 5K in August and the Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning.
