DERRY — After many years of running around the Pinkerton Academy track, local children will head over to Londonderry for the popular summer event.
The Greater Derry Track Club will host the annual Kids' Summer Fun Run program at Londonderry High School this year.
The move is due to some renovation work being planned this summer at Pinkerton Academy.
The fun runs for children have been held for more than 30 years, giving runners ages 2 and up a chance to learn about fitness, fun, and good sportsmanship.
The runs begin June 26 and continue weekly on Tuesdays through Aug. 7.
Members of the Greater Derry Track Club will lead the young runners in warm-up exercises. Races are based on the following age groups: 2 to 3 years old (50 meters); 4 to 6 years old (200 meters); 7 to 8 years old (300 meters); 9 to 10 years old (600 meters); 11 to 13 years old (cross-country mile); and 14 years and up (one mile race on track).
Children will receive participation ribbons each week, provided by the Derry Parks and Recreation Department. Runners who complete the entire run series will get medals and a shirt.
Registration begins on run nights at 6 p.m., with races starting at 6:30 p.m.
Donation of a nonperishable food item at registration time is appreciated.
Water, Gatorade and watermelons will be supplied each week.
There is no need to be a track club member or elite athlete to participate.
The mission of the program is to encourage running in the community and to promote a healthy life style for youth.
Rain delays and cancellations will be posted on the Greater Derry Track Club website, gdtc.org. Email any questions to email@example.com.
The Greater Derry Track Club is a nonprofit charitable organization formed in 1978 to promote running related activities and improvements of the community. The Kids' Summer Fun Run program is one of several events sponsored and conducted by the track club throughout the year.
