Local judo athletes compete in New York

LONDONDERRY — Moreau’s Training Center sent eight judo competitors to Grand Island, N.Y., for the 42nd annual Am-Can International Judo Challenge.

In the junior competition, St. Thomas student Sharunas Fritschy, 6, won a bronze at his first international shiai.

St. Thomas student Anthony Picarello finished fourth.

Sophie Rench, another St. Thomas student, won a gold medal at the Am-Cans in 2013, and was hoping to repeat. She finished fourth.

Colby Gagnon, a fourth-grader at Derry’s Barka Elementary, also won gold in 2013 and showed up ready to go. He also finished fourth.

Tommy Moreau Jr., 11, fell short of the medal stand and finished fourth.

Pinkerton Academy sophomore Derek Low, 15, finished fifth in one of the largest divisions of the day.

Assistant head coach Kevin Fritschy finished with a bronze.

Head coach Tom Moreau won his fourth Am-Cans International Championship.
