High school athletes get ready for srping

Derry News

---- — DERRY — It’s spring and local high school athletes are gearing up for a new season.

A few Pinkerton Academy coaches share their rosters and some goals for the weeks ahead.

Varsity baseball coach Steve Campo saw 80 athletes try out; 19 made the team.

The Astros have just two returning starters, catcher Nate Rossi, a junior, and sophomore infielder Tom Diskin.

There are six other returning varsity players. Those include five seniors: pitcher/infielder Andrew Herlihy, outfielder/catcher Matt Marchman, pitcher Stefan Burnett, pitcher/outfielder Rick Casey and pitcher/infielder Brandon Paquin. Sophomore infielder/catcher Ryan Day is also a returning varsity player.

Promising newcomers include six juniors: pitcher/infielder Connor Donahue, utility player Ryan Flammia, pitcher Nico Alicea, outfielder/pitcher Chris Gerossie, infielder Cam Riley and utility player Eric Byrne.

There are five new sophomores on the roster: infielder/pitcher Mike Albetski, infielder Joe Murphy, outfielder Zach Lippert, outfielder/pitcher Riley Cahill and infielder/pitcher Jericho Howell.

“We need our pitchers to be consistent,” Campo said. “If we can provide a solid defense behind them, we should be able to win some games.”

Senior pitcher/outfielder Samantha Hennequin will captain the Lady Astros varsity softball team, which lost seven seniors to graduation in June.

The team was 12-6 on the season last year, losing to Exeter in the first round of the playoffs.

In addition to Hennequin, junior catcher/infielder Rachel Byrd and junior pitcher/outfielder Natalie Fabrizio are returning starters. Junior outfielder Kelly Fitzsimmons also returns to the varsity team.

Hennequin is the only senior on the team. Newcomers include junior infielder Courtney Collins, sophomore infielder/outfielder Sam Comeau, sophomore infielder Kaylie DeCosmo, junior infielder Amanda Joncas, junior outfielder Kinsey Manchester, junior infielder Candace Moore, sophomore catcher/infielder Lauren Phillips and sophomore infielder/outfielder Olivia Tracy.

Fifty-six girls tried out for 21 spots on the varsity Lady Astros lacrosse team, coached by Rob Daziel.

There are seven returning starters. They include seniors Jackie Johnson, Chevy Collins and Maddison Driscoll. Three junior starters return: Kennedy Daziel, Erin Coutts and Jess Cote. Sophomore Maggie McCarthy also returns as a starter.

Four others also have varsity experience: senior Alison Deyett, junior Julia Hoyt, and sophomores Micaela Capozzo and Amanda Szostak.

Twn “promising newcomers” include: senior Sarah Lambert; juniors Michelle Barrett, Maggie Mulrennan, Eva Murray, Sierra Sanchez and Courtney Lampert; sophomores Colby Millsaps, Kristen Sobolewski and Melanie George; and freshman Ali Davis.

The key to the team’s success is “leveraging our seasoned defensive upper class and executing between the restraining lines,” Daziel said.
