DERRY — The Derry Wrestling Rebels had a strong showing Dec. 29 at Big Red Northeast Wrestling Championships at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.
Almost 1,000 wrestlers showed from all parts of New England, New York and New Jersey.
Leading the way in this tournament was Nathan Landry. He won second by having two pins in first two matches, but the last match was tough. He did a fantastic job.
Sterling McLaughlin came in fourth in his weight bracket. Other contenders for this tournament who wrestled well, but had extremely tough weight brackets were Dylan Lavely, Riley Spellman, Riley Cox, Jack Mackiernan and Andrew Lydick.
Then, on Jan. 5, the Wrestling Rebels went to Merrimack for the first weekend tournament for grades K-4.
Leading the way Molly Fahey, who took first place. Following her lead were Jack Mackiernan and Andrew Lydick, who came in second.
Third-place finishes were awarded to Dillion Lavely, Mike Demartino, Riley Spellman and Riley Cox. Johnathan Little took fourth place.
On Sunday, the Rebels were at the K-8 Chelmsford Youth Wrestling Tournament.
Robbie Fahey and Jack Mackiernan both took home first-place finishes.
Matt MacDougal, Tyler Mackiernan and Jake Scarelli all took second-place finishes.
The rest of the team all had great and tough battles. Riley Spellman finished third.
Fourth-place finishes went to Sterling McLaughlin, Nate Landry, Johnathan Little and Molly Fahey.
