Relays were a big part of the success for the girls; they took first or second in all three relay events. Winning the 400 free relay was the team of freshman Nicole Beals, freshman Jocelyn Hutchinson, freshman Elizabeth Preble and senior Kathryn O’Neil.
Senior Tori Claverie won the 50 Free. Senior Jessica Martin had a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke event. Qualifying for the state meet in the 50 free was freshman Elizabeth Preble.
Astros fall in rematch
On Dec. 19, in a rematch of last year’s championship game, Memorial showed it’s the team to beat this year with a 6-1 victory over the Astros at the Ice Den.
The lone Astro goal was scored by Dominic Corsetto midway through the second period to cut the lead to 4-1. The Astros were unable to convert on multiple power plays to close the gap.
Lancers stop Astros
In the holiday tournament opener, the Londonderry Lancers defeated Pinkerton, 7-5.
Pinkerton put forth an inconsistent effort.
The Lancers built a 2- 1 lead after the first period, then stretched the lead to 4-1 five minutes into the middle frame.
Pinkerton netted 4 consecutive goals before the second intermission, resulting in a fragile 5-4 lead going into the third.
But the Astros fell dormant once again, giving up the next 3 goals in a losing effort. Pinkerton was led by senior Domenic Corsetto with one goal and 2 assists. Sophomore Devin Moore had 2 goals and John Hamilton had 2 assists. Sophomore Ryan Day scored his first career goal.
Astros settle for tie
In holiday tourney action, the Astros faced Greeley (Maine) High School, undefeated in its first four league games.
Greeley opened the scoring late in the first period on the power play. Pinkerton answered 4 minutes into the second as Mike Bellmore scored his first career goal.
The Astros carried the play for the remainder of the game, but were unable to get another one by Greeley’s goaltender, resulting in a 1- 1 tie.
