BILLERICA, Mass. — On Dec. 8, In The Ring Boxing and Fitness Club of Londonderry added another champion to its ranks when Randy Philbrick of Manchester won the sub-novice heavyweight division of the New England Championships Tournament.
“The New Englands” is an annual tournament held under the organization of USA Boxing, the same group that puts together the U.S. Olympic boxing team.
Philbrick of In The Ring Boxing won the title after defeating Jose Abreu of 978 Boxing out of Lawrence, Mass.
As a sub-novice, under USA Boxing guidelines, the match consists of three 2-minutes rounds. Philbrick scored a third round technical knockout when the referee decided that Abreu should not continue following a knockdown.
Philbrick controlled the majority of the match, getting the better of Abreu in Rounds 1 and 2 as well.
In The Ring Boxing coaches and owners Wade and Hollie Anderson of Londonderry were extremely pleased with their boxer’s performance and, of course, very happy with the outcome.
This is the fourth champion the local boxing and fitness gym has produced from this tournament. The gym’s competition team is growing and is earning an excellent reputation within the local boxing community.
In the Ring also recently had great success with its own local boxing “show” at the Sportszone in Derry in September.
