There's always something special at Hood Park

DERRY — The Parks and Recreation Department is offering numerous children's special events at Hood Park throughout the summer.

The 2012 themes include Around the Campfire week, Stars and Stripes, Barnyard Bash, World Travelers, Giant Week, Time Machine and Carnival.

Highlighted events can be found below, but additional events can be found on the Hood Park calendar, available at the Recreation Office as well as on the town of Derry website,

Wednesday, June 27, 1:30 p.m.

It's the NH Wildlife Show. Meet some of the wild animals that inhabit the Granite State. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will have many animals you might see on a hike and talk about the characteristics that suit them for life in New England.

On Tuesday, July 3

The Birthday Party for America starts at 1:30 p.m. Hood Park will be dressed with pride in a red, white and blue celebration. Come out to sing Happy Birthday, walk in a parade and celebrate with some goodies.

Wednesday, July 11, 1 to 3 p.m.

Rednarb Farm will provide free pony rides for all participants. Parental permission is required for this event. Hood staff members reserve the right to close the line early to ensure all participants have an opportunity to ride. Come early.

Wednesday, July 18, 1:30 p.m.

Take an African safari. The W.I.L.D. Center and Zoological Park are returning with the popular Wildlife Encounters live animal show. See some wild animals from Africa. This is one of the biggest events at Hood Park, so be sure to show up early.

Wednesday, July 25, 1:30 p.m.

It's time for Life Size Candy Land. Join King Kandy, Lord Licorice and Mr. Mint in this life-size tribute to a family favorite.

Thursday, July 26, 1:30 p.m.

Play Giant Twister at 1:30 p.m. It's hard enough with two to four players, now try with 20 playing in this massive version of Twister.

Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1:30 p.m.

The Ice Age Mad Science Show. Join the Mad Scientist for a day of fire and ice in this one-of-a-kind science show. Watch as heat and chemicals combine for awesome results. Then move into the frozen world with frozen carbon dioxide.

Thursday, Aug. 2, 1:30 p.m.

Try Ye Olde Medieval Obstacle Course. Join to compete in the Tournament of Knights in this medieval relay. Show off your skills by jousting, saving the princess, crossing the moat. and much more. The fairest of them all will be crowned king and queen.

Wednesday, Aug. 8, It's Carnival Day at 1 p.m.

Try your luck at carnival style games and win prizes. Pay 25 cents for a bag of 13 tokens to win tickets. Then, tickets can be combined to win prizes. In the case of rain, Carnival Day will be held on Thursday, Aug. 9.
