Derry Parks and Rec offers many programs

DERRY — The Derry Parks and Recreation Department has many upcoming programs and events for all ages and interests.

Registration forms for programs can be found on the town's website, derry-nh.org, and at the Parks & Recreation office at 31 West Broadway. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Registration fees can be paid by cash or check. Make checks payable to Derry Parks and Recreation. For additional information on any program or event, call 432-6136.

Adult yoga

Adult Yoga is a Hatha yoga program for adults at least 18 years of age. Participants 16 and 17 years old are also eligible to participate when registering with a parent or guardian.

Classes are designed to fit all ability and experience levels. Each session consists of 75-minute classes held on Thursday evenings at the Alexander Carr Lodge. Students are introduced to the health benefits of yoga through stretching exercises, breathing techniques, yoga postures, flow sequences and relaxation. Adult Yoga instructor is Mariellen Rowe.

Winter Session 1: Jan. 12-Feb. 9, 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and 7 to 8:15 p.m.

Winter Session 2: Feb. 23-March 29, (no class March 1), 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and 7 to 8:15 p.m.

Derry resident fee: $40, non-resident fee: $60; family rate: $25, beginning with second family member.

Gentle yoga

Gentle Yoga if a Hatha style session that consists of specifically designed stretches and yoga poses with emphasis on foundation, alignment and structure to bring most health benefits and comfort to each participant.

Classes use a variety of supports such as blankets, chairs, walls, straps, stretch bands and blocks to increase one's strength, flexibility, balance and comfort.

Breathing exercises will relieve stress and promote relaxation. This class is suitable for beginners to all levels who are looking for a healthy morning yoga stretch. Gentle Yoga instructor is Mariellen Rowe.

Winter Session 1: Jan. 11-Feb. 8, 9 to 9:50 a.m.

Winter Session 2: Feb. 22-March 28, (no class Feb. 29), 9 to 9:50 a.m.

Registration fee: $35.

Adult Pilates

Adult Pilates will improve your core strength, balance and overall fitness through a series of mat exercises. This class is designed for all levels.

Adult Pilates instructor is Brenda Caldwell, who is a certified Pilates instructor. Classes are held on Monday mornings at the Alexander Carr Lodge.

Winter Session 1: Jan. 30-March 12, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Registration fee: $40.

Zumba Fitness

Zumba Fitness is a fusion of Latin music and high energy dance moves, creating a fun, effective workout program. It is based on the principle that workouts should fun and easy to do, motivating participants to stick to the program and achieve long-term goals.

Zumba classes are held on Saturday mornings at the Veterans Hall Gymnasium. Zumba instructor is Julie Dolliver.

Winter Session 1: Jan. 7-Feb. 11, 9 to 10 a.m.

Session registration fee: $40.

Drop-in registration fee: $10 per class.

Judo

The Judo Club is held on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Veterans Hall Gymnasium with instructors Roger Lenfest and Chris Veziris. The Derry Judo Club teaches the art of Judo in a safe manner.

Students who join are first taught conditioning exercises, then how to roll and fall. From there, in a structured and supervised setting, students learn throws and ground techniques, counters to throws and ground techniques, and depending on age and rank, strangles and arm bars.

All students must also join the United States Judo Association, which is $40 for a year's membership.

Winter Session 2: Jan. 9-Feb. 15, 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Spring Session 1: Feb. 20-March 28, 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Registration fee (students 16 years old and younger and students 65 and older): $30; students 17 to 64: $40; family rate, $20 beginning with second family member.

Lil' Samurai Judo

Lil' Samurai Judo is held on Wednesday evenings at the Veterans Hall Gymnasium with instructors Roger Lenfest and Chris Veziris. Lil' Samurai teaches the art of Judo in a safe manner.

Foxwoods Trip

Join the Derry Parks & Recreation Department for a trip to Foxwoods Casino on Monday, Feb. 20. Registration fee includes coach bus transportation, free lunch buffet voucher and $15 keno voucher.

The bus departs from Hood Commons at 7 a.m. and returns to Derry at approximately 7 p.m.

Derry resident fee is $30, non-resident fee is $35.

St. Patrick's Day Trip

Join the Derry Parks & Recreation Department for a trip to White's of Westport in Westport, Mass., on Thursday, March 15.

Enjoy your choice of corned beef and cabbage or boneless breast of chicken for lunch. Both meal options include soup, potato, vegetable, rolls, dessert, and coffee. After lunch, enjoy a fabulous show by Dan Clark, "The Singing State Trooper."

Derry resident fee is $27; non-resident fee is $37.

Newport Murder Mystery Trip

Join the Derry Parks & Recreation for a trip to the Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant on Monday, April 23.

Have a buffet luncheon, then enjoy the interactive Murder Mystery show and cabaret. The buffet lunch includes fruit salad, potato salad, pasta and sauce, roasted chicken, glazed ham and much more.

The Derry resident fee is $43; the bon-resident fee is $53.

Frost Festival

Derry's annual winter extravaganza, Frost Festival, is coming soon! Mark your calendars for February 10th - 12th, 2012 and get ready for a weekend of fun winter events! More information will be available soon!

Frost Ball

The 13th annual Frost Ball will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, in conjunction with Frost Festival.

The Frost Ball will be held at Promises to Keep Restaurant from 6 to 11 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Recreation Office and Derry Municipal Center.

The ticket fee includes appetizers, entwree choice of steak tips or chicken valentino, dessert buffet, cash bar, DJ and door prizes.

Ticket prices are $40 each.

Frost Festival Spaghetti Supper

Senior citizens are invited to the Frost Festival Spaghetti Supper on Friday, Feb. 10. Doors open at 5 p.m.

The dinner is held at the Gilbert H Hood Middle School. Pre-register with the Derry Parks & Recreation at 432-6136.
