DERRY — Cooler evening temperatures and an early rising moon greeted 85 more registrants at the fifth event of the seven-event Greater Derry Track Club's 2010 Kid's Summer Fun Run series.
The registrants brought 330 more pounds of food, bringing the season totals to 790 runners and 1,582 pounds of food. Kids are enjoying running and the shelves of the local food kitchens are being stocked.
GDTC members lead the kids in stretching exercises and provide running tips. The 2- and 3-year-olds run 50 meters, 4- to 6-year-olds run 200 meters, 7- and 8-year-olds run 300 meters, 9- and 10-year-olds run the 600 meters, and the 11- to 13-year-olds run the cross-country mile. Those 14 and older run the open mile on the track, which brings out the local high school elite runners.
The GDTC also supplies entrants with water, Gatorade and watermelon. Runners receive weekly participation ribbons, which are supplied by the Derry Recreation Department. Runners completing the series receive medals and T-shirts from GDTC. For more information and pictures, visit gdtc.org.
The final two event dates are July 29 and Aug. 5 at the Pinkerton Academy track. Registration is at 6 p.m.; races start at 6:30 p.m. Check gdtc.org for weather updates. Runners are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to restock food pantries in the greater Derry area.
