Londonderry's Burbine comes up short in final

Staff Report

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Alex Burbine played through the pain but didn't have quite enough to defeat a very tough opponent.

The Londonderry sophomore, who sustained a broken cheekbone and a slight jaw fracture during an incident at school last Wednesday, advanced to the New Hampshire individual tennis tournament final before falling to ConVal's Connor Hyde.

The 6-foot-5 senior with a booming serve beat Burbine 6-2, 6-0 at the Derryfield School yesterday. Although he couldn't comment on what happened last week (he said the details are still being sorted out), Burbine is waiting to see if he needs surgery.

Still, the injury didn't affect his performance.

"It kind of made me focus more," said Burbine, who beat Trinity's Ben Arguin, 6-1, 6-4, in the semis. "It made me keep my head."

Burbine and teammate Tyler Palmieri will face Hanover's Greg Corwin and Alex Kelley in the doubles semifinals today (4 p.m.) at Derryfield.
