Londonderry blanks Pinkerton, 2-0, for first state title in 27 years
For No. 2 Pinkerton Academy and No. 1 Londonderry High field hockey, the regular season seemed to be an accurate preview of the Class L championship game.
The Astros came out strong in the first 17 minutes, but the Lancers (14-2-1) changed their momentum early on enough to beat their rivals 2-0 and claim their first Class L State Title in 27 years.
Kayla Green scored her 25th goal of the season for Londonderry's first tally of the game at the 13 minute mark. Green, who was hit in the shin with a stick just several minutes before the goal, shot the ball through the PA defense into the net.
Londonderry senior Kristin Spera had the second goal for her team at the end of the first half. The midfielder collected a pass on a penalty corner with just 10 seconds left in the half, dribbled the ball down the field and shot it past Astros' goalie Julie Medeiros for insurance.
Although the Astros had seemed to come close multiple times in the second half, nothing came of it. Junior midfielder Courtney Bedell played outstanding defense for the Lancers, keeping PA's sticks silent.
LHS Coach Marcia Manseau won her first state title since returning to the sidelines three years ago. She was the coach when Londonderry won its last state crown in 1981.
PA ends its season at 12-2-3.
